Gravesham Borough Council Workplace Chaplaincy

I joined Malcolm Cooper on the work place chaplaincy team at the Gravesham Civic Centre in 2009.  As in all situations, it takes time to build relationships with people, but I have found that food can be a useful way to break the ice. Last autumn, I decided to introduce myself to the various floors by spending a couple of hours in their coffee areas with cakes and donuts. The personnel department informed the staff and encouraged them to come along and say ‘hello’.

Since that introduction, I have endeavoured to work with personnel to set some specific times when staff can meet me in the occupational health room for a chat and several employees have taken up this opportunity, and meet regularly with me.  I also endeavour to spend some time ‘walking the floors’ to remind staff that the chaplaincy ministry is there to offer support.
